Artificial Intelligence and Ontology (2025): An OSE Curated Collection

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This publication presents a curated editorial collection of six peer-reviewed papers published in 2025 that engage with questions of artificial intelligence and ontology. Rather than offering a systematic review or meta-analysis, the piece provides a selective, interpretive mapping of how contemporary AI research is increasingly approaching ontological questions through effects, processes, relational embedding, and socio-technical participation, rather than through appeals to consciousness or internal mental states. The collection draws deliberately on work published across different regional and disciplinary contexts, including European, North American, and African venues. Journal prestige and geography were not used as selection criteria; instead, papers were included on the basis of their conceptual contribution to ongoing debates about what kinds of entities AI systems are, and how they matter within human practices and environments. The publication is intended as an editorial and curatorial intervention rather than a comprehensive review. It aims to make visible emerging patterns of ontological thinking in AI research as they appeared in 2025, and to provide a stable, citable reference point for scholars interested in contemporary philosophical approaches to artificial intelligence.
