A Study on the Improving Pump Discharge Capacity through Velocity Acceleration in Inflow Waterway and Detention Reservoir

Type: article
Abstract: Flooding in the rainwater pump station basin, which cannot be naturally drained in the case of heavy rainfall, can be forcibly discharged through the rainwater pump; however, if the slope of the inflow waterway is gentle, the inflow into the detention reservoir becomes inefficient, and the rainwater pump cannot operate effectively, resulting in flooding in the upper-middle-class low-lying areas. In this study, a simulation analysis was conducted to examine the effects of scenarios that enable accelerated flow and early activation in rainwater pump stations with inflow channels and detention reservoirs where floodwater inflow is difficult to improve the pumping efficiency and enhance the forced discharge capacity of rainwater pumps. This study performed a simulation-based performance analysis using a stormwater management model (SWMM) to evaluate the effects of implementing velocity accelerator and guided water channel. The introduction of a Velocity Accelerator increased the flow rate capacity of the inflow waterway, virtually designed guided water channel in the detention reservoir and approach waterway was applied to ensure the smooth inflow of the initial floodwater into the rainwater pump station. The results indicate an increase in the forced drainage efficiency of the rainwater pumping station, a reduction in the operational water level of the detention reservoir, and improved flood mitigation in low-lying areas.
