A Comprehensive Review of Urban Waste Mismanagement and its Psychosocial-Environmental Impacts in Punjab, India
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Urban centers in Punjab face significant environmental degradation due to inadequate waste management systems that process only 41.1% of total municipal solid waste generated daily. The accumulation of plastic waste and mixed refuse across urban landscapes degrades visual aesthetics and air quality while contributing to heightened psychological stress and adverse mental health outcomes among residents. This comprehensive review synthesizes current literature, government reports, and empirical data to examine the interrelationships between waste mismanagement, environmental degradation, and psychosocial well-being in Punjab's major cities. Drawing on ecological stress theory and attention restoration frameworks, this study employs a convergent parallel mixed-methods design to analyze waste processing deficits, environmental impacts, and community health outcomes. Results demonstrate that major cities generate 4,374.6 tonnes per day (TPD) while processing only 1,795.8 TPD, leaving 2,578.8 TPD unprocessed. Air quality near waste sites shows PM2.5 concentrations averaging 84 μg/m³ compared to 45 μg/m³ in control areas, correlating with 54% higher respiratory morbidity rates. Psychosocial assessment reveals dose-response relationships between proximity to waste sites and elevated anxiety scores (12.8 vs. 6.3 on a 0-21 scale), depression symptoms (15.6 vs. 7.1 on a 0-27 scale), and reduced community engagement (23% vs. 58%). Policy implementation analysis uncovers systematic governance failures, including 3.02% average municipal budget allocation for waste management, 30.4% Extended Producer Responsibility compliance, and 4.0% National Green Tribunal penalty recovery rates. The study proposes integrated interventions combining centralized authority structures, increased resource allocation, decentralized processing infrastructure, performance-based incentives, and community mental health support systems.
