President's Pen—Tending the Flame: Caring for Ourselves While Caring for Others

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As nurse researchers, clinicians, educators, and leaders, we are no strangers to the weight of competing demands. Our days are filled with caring for others including patients, students, communities, and colleagues, while advancing science, mentoring emerging scholars, writing grants, and fulfilling administrative and service responsibilities. We hold the extraordinary privilege of influencing health and healthcare through evidence, innovation, and compassion.Yet that same privilege can also pull at the edges of our own well-being.Over the past year, I've had countless conversations with members across our Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) region about faculty balancing research expectations with heavy teaching loads, DNP and PhD students navigating the pressures of publishing and clinical practice, and clinicians who remain steadfastly committed to patient care while pursuing scholarly inquiry in their "off hours."What I hear, time and again, is not just fatigue, but also a yearning for alignment, a desire to continue serving others without losing oneself in the process.
