Abstract: Surgical smoke poses serious health risks to OR staff and patients during procedures involving energy-generating devices or lasers.Although advocacy for smoke-free ORs and legislation is gaining momentum in developed countries, such efforts remain inconsistent across African health care systems. As a surgical smoke safety advocate in the United States and abroad, Johnson Ogundare, DNP, MPH, RN, CNOR, supports a multipronged strategy emphasizing increased government involvement, standardized training, and enforceable legislation to ensure the uniform application of surgical smoke safety measures across every continent. His strategies for targeted advocacy and empirical research can inform policy in any setting and strengthen broader efforts globally to mitigate the hazards of surgical smoke.
