Vanishing act: The peril of a freely mobile foreign body hidden in the eyelid

Year: 2025

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Intraorbital foreign bodies because of trauma in children often present various challenges in clinical practice. We present the unique case report of a 10-year-old male child with a history of trauma by pencil during a fight with another student in school and presented 5 months later with a graphite foreign body in the left upper eyelid. Ultrasound B scan confirmed the presence of the foreign body in the eyelid. The foreign body was freely mobile in the subdermal preseptal orbital fat. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia and a 6 mm graphite pencil lead was removed successfully. Follow-up USG-B scan confirmed no residual piece. Small size, free mobility, breakability of foreign body, and minimal size of surgical incision were some of the challenges of surgery.
