Exploring the Symbiotic Relationship between Dialectics and Dialogical Approaches to Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: A Philosophical Perspective

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper explores the interdependent relationship between dialogue and dialectic as foundational to intellectual development in higher education. Rather than being separate or opposing modes of inquiry, dialogue and dialectic are shown to be mutually reinforcing processes that foster co-construction of knowledge. Dialogue initiates shared understanding, while dialectic deepens and organizes that understanding through structured reflection and synthesis. This iterative, spiral process is inherently open-ended, with each cycle generating new insights and opportunities for inquiry. In the context of artificial intelligence, the paper examines the limitations of machine-driven communication, arguing that while AI may facilitate information exchange, it lacks the relational, emotional, and ethical dimensions that define genuine dialogical and dialectical engagement. AI interactions often mimic dialogue without embodying its human core, raising concerns about authenticity and agency. The paper advocates for a careful integration of AI into higher education—not as a replacement for human thought, but as a supportive tool that preserves the reflective, ethical, and collaborative nature of academic inquiry.
