Digital Tactility: Technical Specifications for the Adaptation of Industrial Safety Standards in Immersive Interfaces
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This technical document presents Draft Standard P7100, a framework of engineering specifications designed to regulate the physical interaction between digital entertainment systems and human physiology. As consumer hardware—ranging from personal computers to extended reality devices—increases its sensory processing capability, this proposal addresses biological risks not covered by current content regulations. The framework establishes safety protocols through the technical adaptation of three existing global standards: • Adaptation of ISO 2631-1 (Mechanical Vibration): Defines the Entertainment Haptic Dose Value (eHDV) and establishes mandatory high-pass filters for sub-auditory ballistic pressure (<20 Hz) to prevent organ resonance. • Adaptation of IEEE 1789 (Optical Safety): Extends regulations to Game Engines and GPU rendering to prevent neuro-entrainment (photic driving) and regulates luminance delta limits in software. • Adaptation of ISO 9241-210 (System Ergonomics): Introduces Cross-Modal Gain Staging to manage aggregate sensory load and mitigate cognitive saturation during immersive states. Objective The primary objective is to define quantifiable tolerances in the output of audio, video, and haptic signals, ensuring that technological immersion operates within the safe limits of human biological capacity under the principle of Somatic Integrity.
