Evaluation of Anticancer activity and total phenolic compounds of Agaricus bisporus.

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of phenolic compounds from Agaricus bisporus against cancer. The primary goal was to assess their toxicity on non-cancerous cells versus their anti-tumor activity on MCF-7 (breast) and A549 (lung) cancer lines. Findings: Results revealed high safety, with an IC50 of 1780.15 μg/ml for normal cells. Conversely, the extract showed potent dose-dependent cytotoxicity; at 300 μg/ml, cell viability dropped significantly to 17.81% (MCF-7) and 12.95% (A549). Mechanistically, the compounds triggered programmed cell death (apoptosis values up to 31.44) and induced high oxidative stress, with ROS levels exceeding 1320. Comet assays confirmed significant DNA damage at the highest concentrations. In conclusion, these phenolic compounds serve as selective anti-cancer agents, effectively inducing apoptosis and genomic damage while maintaining low toxicity to healthy tissues.Mechanistically, the compounds triggered programmed cell death (apoptosis values up to 31.44) and induced high oxidative stress, with ROS levels exceeding 1320.
