Hairstyle Choices of Children: Balancing Parental Influence and Autonomy of Children
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Hair is a way of self expression that allows individuals to showcase their personality, often representing traditions and ethnicity. Parents generally pass down their values and traditions, including specific hairstyles or grooming practices to their children. This kind of parental influence could be due to multiple reasons, namely religious beliefs, spiritual principles, gender norms, alignment with societal expectations or family values, etc. However, once a child decides about their hairstyle, it allows them to express their unique personality, preferences, and creativity, which are crucial in facilitating self development. The above discussion highlights the presence of multiple ethical dilemmas while making hairstyle choices among children, all of which need to be addressed carefully. Hairstyle choice is an integral part of the identity that must evolve with personal, cultural, and societal parameters. We must draw a balance between parental influence and the emerging autonomy and identity of children, and there is an immense need to support children to become confident and independent.
