The Changes of Domestic Kitchen Space: Examining in Contemporary Housing Complexes in Northern Cyprus
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The kitchen plays a crucial role in interior design, where thoughtful fixture arrangement enhances functionality and aesthetics. In Northern Cyprus, kitchens have seen significant evolution. Once used exclusively for cooking, they now serve various functions, reflecting shifts in lifestyle. This study explores the transformation of domestic kitchens over time, focusing on their design, usage, and integration with other areas of the house. It aims to identify new design solutions that accommodate these changes. The methodology included a literature review and a case study of apartments built between 2015-2023, with interviews conducted in four major cities across Northern Cyprus. The findings show that kitchens remain central to house design, with a growing need for flexibility to support a variety of activities beyond cooking. This underscores the importance of innovative designs that adapt to the multifunctional nature of contemporary kitchens.
