Abstract: AI could strengthen health equity, if we make the right choices now Mandeep Dhaliwal director of the HIV and health groupIn the remote islands of Chuuk state, Micronesia, tuberculosis has long been a silent crisis, spreading quietly through communities, often undiagnosed. For many decades, tuberculosis could only be identified using x rays but the bulky machines required electricity, a doctor, or radiologist, and several people to transport them-resources that were often unavailable. However, two years ago that began to change. An AI assisted, portable x ray machine that could detect tuberculosis in seconds enabled health workers to test and immediately diagnose people in Chuuk state.Nearly everyone with active tuberculosis then started treatment. This is one of many remarkable stories of AI innovation in health.Across the world, AI is cutting clinical trial times in half, 1 aiding the discovery of new antibiotics, 2 and more effectively predicting disease outbreaks, including those linked to climate change.
