CO 2 sequestration through mineral carbonation for building material

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The present study investigates the utilization of Linz‐Donawitz (LD) slag, a steelmaking by‐product, for carbon capture and its potential use as a sustainable material in concrete production. LD slag, characterized by its high calcium oxide content (~53%), was subjected to mineral carbonation to form stable carbonates, like calcite and aragonite. The carbonation experiments were conducted under atmospheric temperature and pressure at varying times. The maximum carbonation efficiency (19.1%) was achieved at 8 h. The 30% carbonated LD slag blocks exhibited higher compressive strength compared to non‐carbonated LD slag and OPC (100%) samples. Additionally, increasing the carbonation duration improved the blocks' mechanical properties, while decreasing strength as the slag content exceeded optimal thresholds. The carbonated LD slag can be used in various applications, including pavement construction and structural purposes. This approach offers a viable pathway for reducing the carbon footprint of steelmaking and concrete production, contributing to environmental sustainability.
