Abstract: This study examines the book Tanzīh al-Anbiyāʾ by al-Sharif al-Murtada through the lens of argumentation theory, focusing on one of the most controversial theological issues in Islamic thought: the infallibility of the prophets and their freedom from sins and transgressions. The research traces the roots of doctrinal disagreement among Islamic schools regarding the interpretation of certain Qur'anic expressions that appear to relate to prophetic conduct. It highlights how literal readings of these texts-sometimes influenced by Israelite narratives-contributed to views that undermine the sanctity and moral authority of the prophets. The study demonstrates that al-Sharif al-Murtada adopted a critical evaluative method based on presenting opposing arguments and systematically refuting them, while establishing clear argumentative principles that prioritize rational evidence, subject transmitted reports to rational scrutiny, and employ linguistic, rhetorical, and contextual interpretation of ambiguous texts. It also analyzes the main argumentative techniques used in the work, such as induction, rebuttal, preference among interpretations, and the integration of rational, textual, and linguistic forms of argumentation. The study concludes that Tanzīh al-Anbiyāʾ represents a coherent and sophisticated model of classical Islamic argumentative discourse aimed at safeguarding prophetic infallibility as a fundamental condition for credibility, acceptance, and compliance with divine revelation.
