Utilization of E-Waste Plastic and Bacteria-Based Self-Healing in Concrete: A Technical Investigation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research presents a dual-solution approach to current environmental and material challenges in civil construction by utilizing Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) E-Waste as a coarse aggregate replacement and enhancing concrete performance through bacterial self-healing techniques using Sporosarcinapasteurii. Various replacement ratios were tested (10%–22% for ABS, 3%–10% for bacteria, and 10%–15% for calcium lactate as a calcium source). Results show that a 15% replacement of coarse aggregate with E-Waste combined with 3% of bacteria and 10% calcium lactate provides optimal compressive and tensile properties, with compressive strength increasing up to 8.93% and tensile strength by 20.28% at 28 days compared to conventional concrete. This method offers a sustainable, economically viable, and technically effective solution to improve the durability and environmental footprint of concrete.
