Modelling Change in Emotion Dynamics in Depressed and Non-depressed Individuals

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Where one’s affect tends to reside (affective homebase) and how strongly one’s affect is being pulled back towards homebase (attractor strength) are not well captured by traditional indices of affect dynamics. These emotional dynamic features could be strong indicators of emotional well-being and may explain how depression and age-related differences influence one’s ability to maintain and shift toward emotional equilibrium in daily life. The current study aims to adopt a continuous time, univariate multilevel Stochastic Differentiation Equation (SDE) approach (Driver et al., 2017; Kuppens et al., 2010) in modelling intraindividual dynamics of negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) to examine how major depressive disorder (MDD), severity of depressive symptoms, and age could influence these dynamics in the context of daily emotional experiences.
