The Orthographic Reform of Patriarch Euthymius as a Manifestation of the Conscious Language Policy of Medieval Bulgaria
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents the reforming activities of the last patriarch of medieval Bulgaria in the context of the political changes that took place in the Balkans in the fourteenth century. The study shows how the orthographic arrangement of Slavic books influenced the condition of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and thus its approach to Greek writings. It also takes into account the consequences of Euthymius’ reform for Slavic writings – both religious and secular – under the conditions of Ottoman rule.
