Match-making: A Novel Gamification Model for Simulating Multiple Simultaneous Resuscitation Scenarios in the Emergency Department
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In the dynamic landscape of medical education and patient care, adequately preparing healthcare professionals to manage mass casualties is crucial. This study introduces a novel gamification model named match-making, designed to simulate multiple simultaneous resuscitation scenarios in the emergency department.Leveraging the mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics (MDA) framework, the gamification model divides patient management into five critical elements: Triage, primary survey, adjuncts to primary survey, treatment, and disposition.Working collaboratively as a team, participants receive prespecified triage levels, diagnoses, and treatments, aiming to match each patient with the appropriate criteria.Successful matches advance participants to the next step, while mismatches prompt debriefing and reattempt opportunities. Two iterations of the match-making gamification model, utilizing six shock patients, garnered structured feedback. Results indicated that 75% of students perceived the model as effective in simulating multiple casualty incidents, and 91% found it enjoyable.Consequently, we propose adopting this gamification model for teaching multiple casualty and simultaneous resuscitation scenarios in medical education.
