The Asymmetry of Memory: Why Humanity Remembers Your Successes and Forgets Your Failures
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This work presents a rigorous interdisciplinary investigation into one of the most consequential yet underappreciated phenomena in human social dynamics: the profound asymmetry between how failures and successes are remembered over time. Through an integrative synthesis of cognitive psychology, social network theory, evolutionary anthropology, historical analysis, and mathematical modeling of reputation dynamics, we demonstrate that collective memory exhibits a systematic bias toward retaining positive achievements while rapidly forgetting negative events—a pattern we term the Success Persistence Principle.
