Year: 2025

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: An individual’s behavior and beliefs are influenced by various factors throughout their life. Among these, parents and friends typically have the strongest impact. Parents often shape behavior through their expectations, while peers contribute significantly through social interactions and influence. Aims: This study aims to assess the peer- and parental-related factors on academic performance among Nursing Students. Methods: A correlational study was carried out at Yenepoya Nursing College in Mangaluru, Karnataka, between March and May 2021. A total of 120 nursing students were selected through stratified random sampling. Data collection tools included a demographic profile form, questionnaires assessing peer and parental influence, and an academic performance checklist. The gathered data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Relationships between variables were examined using Spearman’s rho, while associations were assessed with the Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: The findings showed that majority (68.3%) of the students scored first class, 20% scored second class, 6.7% were failed, and 5% scored distinction. Parental pressure (Mean 10.03) was significantly higher than that of peer pressure (mean 9.53). There was no significant correlation between peer- and parental-related factors ( P > 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that most students performed well academically overall. Although some differences were observed between parental and peer pressure, these factors showed no significant impact on academic achievement. This implies that academic performance may be influenced by other underlying factors beyond parental and peer influences.
