A Comparative Study to Assess Digital Burnout among Nursing and Nonnursing Students at SOA University, Bhubaneswar, India
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: The rapid integration of digital technology in education, particularly during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, has significantly increased screen time among students. While digital tools have enhanced learning outcomes, they have also contributed to a growing concern – digital burnout. Nursing students, due to the demands of both academic and clinical responsibilities, may be particularly vulnerable compared to nonnursing students. This study aimed to assess and compare levels of digital burnout among nursing and nonnursing (pharmacy) students at SOA University, Bhubaneswar. Methodology: A nonexperimental comparative research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect sociodemographic data and the Digital Burnout Scale to assess burnout levels. A total of 200 participants were selected through convenience sampling, comprising 100 nursing students and 100 pharmacy students. Results: Nursing students reported higher digital aging (70%), while pharmacy students showed more digital deprivation (33%) and emotional exhaustion (10%). Longer daily screen time was significantly associated with burnout in both groups ( P < 0.05), with age and fatigue also contributing among pharmacy students. Conclusion: Digital burnout is common among health science students, primarily driven by screen time. Targeted interventions to reduce screen exposure and manage fatigue may help mitigate burnout risk.
