Agroecological Memory in the Context of Climate Change: Drought-Resilient Local Varieties, Gastronomy, and Sustainable Cultural Heritage

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Climate change is addressed as a global issue that generates simultaneous and multi-layered impacts on agricultural production systems, food security, and cultural heritage. The increasing frequency of droughts and climatic uncertainties reveal the ecological and socio-cultural vulnerabilities of high-input industrial agricultural models, while simultaneously enhancing the importance of approaches grounded in local knowledge, biological diversity, and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies. In this context, agroecology is positioned in the literature as a holistic approach that conceptualizes agricultural production not merely as a technical activity, but within the framework of ecological processes, social relations, and cultural practices. This study examines the relationships between agroecological memory, drought-resilient local varieties, and sustainable cultural heritage through a literature review based on qualitative research methods. The reviewed studies demonstrate that traditional ecological knowledge contributes to agricultural and cultural continuity by preserving local plant varieties and sustaining them through gastronomic practices. Within this framework, agroecological memory is considered an analytical concept that enables the linking of past experiences with contemporary production and consumption practices in the context of climate change adaptation and the development of resilient food systems.
