Occurrence of Xylophagous Coleoptera on Mountain Plants of the Western Tien-shan Within the Flora of Uzbekistan

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the occurrence and ecological patterns of xylophagous Coleoptera associated with mountain plants in the Western Tien-Shan, a region recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and high level of endemism. Surveys were conducted across representative forest and shrub communities in Uzbekistan, with special attention to dominant woody species and decaying plant substrates. Standardized sampling techniques, including bark inspection, emergence trapping, and quantitative vegetation assessment, were used to document species composition and host associations. The results reveal a diverse assemblage of beetles exhibiting distinct preferences for certain plant taxa and stages of wood decomposition. Several species appear to function as key agents in nutrient cycling and wood turnover, while others may pose potential risks to weakened or stressed trees. Altitudinal gradients and microclimatic conditions were found to significantly influence species distribution and abundance. Our findings highlight the ecological importance of xylophagous Coleoptera in maintaining forest dynamics and underscore the need for targeted conservation strategies in sensitive mountain ecosystems. This research provides baseline data essential for monitoring future environmental changes and supports the development of sustainable forest-management practices in the Western Tien-Shan region of Uzbekistan. Further studies integrating molecular identification and long-term monitoring are recommended to refine species inventories and improve understanding of their functional roles.
