An Avoidable Tragedy: Coldrif Cough Syrup Deaths!

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Medicines are often treated as sacrosanct; people assume that if a drug is bought from a pharmacy, especially one prescribed by a doctor, it must be safe. This trust is fragile, especially for poorer citizens who have fewer options. AccountabilitySo far, action has included suspension of the prescribing doctor, FIRs against the manufacturer, and state governments banning the implicated syrup batch. But responsibility spreads wider: pharmaceutical manufacturers, regulatory authorities, drug inspectors, and political oversight structures.Whose failure allowed DEG to enter a medicinal syrup? Equity and Health AccessThe burden seemed to fall heavily on rural, poorer families. The lack of infrastructure, dialysis centers, and specialized care in rural districts means that preventable medical emergencies become fatal. For many, seeking private care is prohibitively expensive. Health Infrastructure GapsParasia block in Chhindwara district, for example, lacks a dialysis unit. The parents of affected children report having to travel long distances, sometimes hundreds of kilometers, to receive appropriate care.By the time referral happens, the damage may be irreversible.
