Women on a Mission: The Oblates of the Assumption and the Transformation of Catholic Outreach in the Ottoman Balkans

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The study explores the pivotal role of female congregations, particularly the Oblates of the Assumption, in the Assumptionist mission to Bulgaria between 1860 and 1882. Amid the complex socio-political landscape of the Ottoman Empire, these congregations played a crucial role in extending Catholic influence through healthcare, education, and social services, often reaching communities inaccessible to their male counterparts. The study argues that the presence of female missionaries not only strengthened the mission’s outreach but also disrupted traditional Church hierarchies, as women assumed more significant responsibilities and autonomy. By situating these developments within broader geopolitical and ecclesiastical trends, this research reveals how Roman Catholic missionary work evolved in response to local demands and the transformative presence of women in a Roman Catholic congregation.
