Empowering Children with Disabilities in Yemen: A Strategic Approach to Inclusive Education and Capacity Development

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: Children with disabilities (CWD) in Yemen face significant barriers to accessing quality education due to ongoing conflict, socio-economic instability, and infrastructural challenges. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data and qualitative insights, to assess the impact of an inclusive education project implemented by the Yamani Foundation for Development and Humanitarian Aid (YDH) and supported by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). Data triangulation and rigorous quality checks ensured validity and reliability. Results: The project supported 3,694 CWD (35% girls) across 28 Disability Centers in six governorates, providing furniture, assistive devices, computers, and recreational materials. Training was delivered to 538 teachers and volunteers in inclusive pedagogical strategies, communication techniques, behavioural management, and psychosocial support. Personalised instruction in speech, sign language, Braille, and core academics improved engagement, academic performance, and attendance. Infrastructure improvements and community engagement fostered inclusive learning environments and positive societal attitude shifts. Conclusion: The project demonstrated significant progress in advancing inclusive education, promoting independence and social integration among CWD. Recommendations include longer-term initiatives, expanded capacity building, increased parental involvement, and societal awareness campaigns to ensure sustainability.
