Numerical Investigation of a Divided-Leg Thermoelectric Generator for Enhanced Power and Efficiency

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In light of the ongoing energy crisis, experts and global leaders pursue alternative energy solutions. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) present a promising option, offering a sustainable and efficient means to address current energy demands. Despite numerous TEG designs, their efficiency remains significantly low, posing a challenge for widespread adoption. In this study, we introduce a leg division method designed to enhance the efficiency of thermoelectric generators. To establish its superiority, the design was simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5, and its performance was compared with that of the conventional rectangular leg geometry. In both cases, a temperature gradient of 280 K (Th = 573 K, Tc = 293 K) was maintained, with the material volume held constant to ensure a fair comparison. The results show that the new model achieves an open-circuit voltage of 64.3 mV, which is 1.2 times higher than the traditional design. The maximum power output reaches 49.22 mW, 2.8 times greater than the conventional model, and the maximum efficiency is 6.69%, representing a 2.1-fold increase compared to the previous design. The enhanced performance of the new TEG design has the potential to transform its role in renewable energy by improving waste heat harvesting, thereby advancing sustainable power generation.
