Comparative Biomechanical Evaluation of Javelin Throw Techniques: National Champion versus World Champion

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Aims and Scope of the Paper Biomechanics has become one of the most influential scientific tools in understanding technical performance in athletics. The study seeks to examine the biomechanical differences between a world champion and the Egyptian national champion to identify the key kinematic variables that influence performance and clarify the technical factors responsible for the performance gap. Methods Two athletes were analyzed: the winner of the 2007 World Championships and the champion of the 2021 Egyptian National Championships. A three-camera high-speed setup (240 fps) was used to conduct a three-dimensional analysis based on a 22-point full-body model including the javelin. Spatial and temporal data were processed through DLT reconstruction, with the throw divided into the pull and delivery phases to examine segmental motion, velocities, angles, and displacement patterns. Results The analysis revealed clear biomechanical differences between the two athletes, particularly in the way each managed velocity, coordination, and release mechanics. The world champion demonstrated more effective control of body segments during the critical phases of the throw, while the national champion, despite showing a longer pull distance and certain stride modifications, did not achieve release conditions that supported greater throwing distance. Conclusion The results emphasize that elite javelin performance depends on precise timing, controlled velocity patterns, and optimized release mechanics. The study provides practical biomechanical insights that can support improved training strategies and help reduce the gap between national and international levels.
