Specific energy absorption in thin-walled tubes with lengthwise hole size variation
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Although various studies have been conducted on thin-walled tubes related to energy absorption, a detailed analysis of the influence of longitudinal hole size variation for cylindrical perforated thin-walled tubes has yet to be explored. The aim of this study is to examine, both experimentally and numerically, the crushing response and specific energy absorption (SEA) of thin-walled ST-37 steel cylindrical tubes with five various types of configurations via quasi-static compressive loading simulations. The results show that among all types, ETC has the highest SEA and total energy absorption with relatively better crushing stability and crushing efficiency, while simple holes generate greater crushing forces but render lower crushing stability and efficiency. It is apparent that the inclusion and positions of holes strongly affect the folding patterns, loading force, and energy dissipation rates related to instabilities associated with folding patterns and loading forces. A detailed exploration of longitudinal hole sizes is presented, leading to the development of an efficient energy absorption strategy, hence providing invaluable contributions to the engineering community utilizing this novel approach as a thin-walled energy absorber technology solution. • The ETC configuration resulted in the highest absorption and crushing ratio. • The placement of holes significantly impacts folding, load transfer, and energy dissipation. • Optimized patterns of holes allow efficient crushing and better structural strength.
