Taking singularity and social relations into account in prevention: an analysis of social mediation activity and its occupational health issues through the prism of intersectionality
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This article analyzes the discrepancies between service activities, and more specifically social mediation, and the frameworks of thought and action that structure occupational risk prevention. It is based on a conceptual framework that highlights the specific features of service activities through the prism of social relationships and their intersection, in order to question the appropriateness of the prevention system for these activities.Rooted in the field of activity ergonomics, the qualitative methodology used articulates the production of knowledge on the prevention needs of these activities, by crossing the theoretical frameworks of prevention and their implementation by the professionals accompanying the social mediation structure. The data on activity is based on field analyses, several case studies of violence against social mediation professionals, and the content of exchanges during a practice analysis session. The results show that the diversity and singularity of these situations are difficult to reconcile with the quantification and evaluation practices inherent in risk assessment. This calls into question the way in which psychosocial dimensions are apprehended through the concept of psychosocial risks.Ultimately, the article invites readers to move away from the dominant paradigm and the logics of standardization inherent in the prevention system, in order to improve health by taking better account of social relationships and the specificities of service activities.
