Abstract: In this article, we investigate the discursive elaboration about the vaquejada in the municipality of Currais Novos, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in periodical publications from 1975 to 1977, using theoretical references from Cultural History about the use of press in historical research. It was identified that such elaboration about the event occurred concomitantly with the efforts of agents from the local political and economic spheres to consolidate it as a traditional party and, therefore, it can be understood as an invented tradition. The notion of tradition began to mobilize elements from a historical past in order to justify a new practice with new purposes, in this case, the promotion of a party consolidated as a tourist attraction in the municipality.
