Exploring magnetic kaolinite composite for dye removal in synthetic and environmental water

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This preliminary study provides insights into the potential of magnetic kaolinite clay (MKC) composite for practical application in treating dye-contaminated wastewater. The clay composite was synthesised in suspension via the co-precipitation method and further characterised using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) techniques. Adsorption experiments were conducted in synthetic (deionised) and environmental (tap and drain) water. MKC produced shows strong magnetic susceptibility (14 emu/g) and a preference for Methylene Blue (MB) dye removal compared to Methyl Orange (MO). A 100% removal was recorded at low MB dye concentration (5 mg/L). FTIR analysis further confirms the adhesion of dye towards MKC surface. MKC demonstrated high MB dye removal efficiency (>70%) in environmental water samples. The results suggest that ionic strength, as reflected by the aqueous conductivity properties, may influence the MB-MKC dye interaction. These findings highlight the potential of MKC for practical application in complex, real-world wastewater treatment scenarios.
