Old Age Homes and Bharat (india)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In Bharat (India), caring for the elderly has traditionally been a family responsibility rooted in cultural values such as dharma, respect, and gratitude toward parents. Sreelekha believes that the concept of old age homes does not align with Indian culture because it weakens these deeply rooted traditions. Indian society has long followed the joint family system, where elders live with their children and are respected as sources of wisdom, guidance, and moral values. Placing parents in old age homes, she feels, disrupts intergenerational bonds and reduces emotional closeness. According to Sreelekha, Indian philosophy views parents as deserving lifelong care, and serving them is considered a sacred duty. While old age homes may provide physical comfort and medical support, they often lack the emotional warmth and personal attention found in family environments. Although such institutions may be necessary in exceptional situations, Sreelekha believes family-based care remains the ideal approach consistent with Indian cultural values.
