Applied theatre as a tool for social transformation: examining its impact on learners affected by gang violence
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Research indicates a significant correlation between fractured family structures and gang involvement, with children from unstable homes facing heightened risks of untreated mental health issues like depression and anxiety, which can predispose them to gangsterism. This qualitative study explored the impact of forum theatre interventions in Helenvale, Gqeberha, engaging 16 participants aged 12–14 from two local primary schools, with balanced gender representation. Data collected through pre- and post-performance interviews revealed that job scarcity, food insecurity, and domestic instability; including conflict, neglect, and absent fathers profoundly fuel gang violence. Without consistent parental guidance, especially from fathers, many teens seek male affirmation within gangs. Despite governmental and religious efforts, sustainable behavioral change remains elusive, underscoring the urgent need for targeted, community-based interventions addressing both economic deprivation and familial support systems to mitigate gang-related violence in South Africa.
