Studies on ‘barbarian’ Europe at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków – past and present
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The beginnings of the studies on the archaeology of the pre-Roman, Roman, and Migration Periods at the Jagiellonian University can be traced to Professor Rudolf Jamka. His scholarly work was primarily focused on the Przeworsk culture. The true heyday of these studies can be traced to Professor Kazimierz Godłowski, the author of monumental works on the periodisation of the Roman Period and the early phase of the Migration Period, as well as a pioneer of the allochthonous theory of the origins of the Slavs. His students, Professor Piotr Kaczanowski, Professor Magdalena Mączyńska, and Professor Renata Madyda-Legutko, continued his research and launched a number of their own research initiatives, which are continued today by the current staff of the Department of Iron Age Archaeology.
