Abstract: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that destroys insulin-producing beta cells, leading to acute complications and requiring lifelong insulin injections. With growing interest and medical needs, especially in the United States due to rising obesity and diabetes rates, beta cell-based therapy is advancing. In the U.S., research groups and biotechnology companies are developing cutting-edge technologies, such as stem cell-derived beta cells with injectable scaffolds, which can protect beta cells from immune responses. These approaches are already undergoing clinical trials.Meanwhile, research in Korea is mainly focused on polymer encapsulation.Although these studies have demonstrated effective blood glucose regulation in animal models, challenges remain in maintaining long-term viability of the transplanted beta cells and functional stability.Ongoing international collaboration and knowledge exchange will help accelerate the development of long-term, safe, and effective technologies for type 1 diabetes treatment.
