Abstract: Informal settlements, slums, favelas, gecekondus, barrios, townships or bastis are part of cities across the globe, sheltering people IN BETWEEN jobs, regulations and formal housing. This research argues that traditional planning culture and instruments must be amended to cope with the needs of today’s cities, conceptualising innovative methods to integrate the requirements of all citizens into the planning process. Dharavi is examined as a case study to understand the context of such settlements and explore new possibilities through hybrid buildings in urban (re)development projects.
