Affiliate stigma in family members of people living with dementia: A cross-sectional study identifying protective factors

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the association between affiliate stigma and mental well-being and the potential moderating role of psychosocial factors. METHODS: Data were from 101 family caregivers of people living with dementia (mean age=65.1, 86% female) that completed an online survey measuring affiliate stigma, mental health, social support, self-compassion, attitudes towards ageing, and positive meaning in caregiving. Hierarchical regression analysis with interaction terms and stratified analyses were employed to evaluate the moderating effects of psychosocial factors. RESULTS: Higher affiliate stigma was significantly associated with poorer caregiver mental well-being (β=0.30, p = 0.002). Stratified analyses indicated that the effect of affiliate stigma on well-being was less pronounced among caregivers with high self-compassion and positive attitudes towards ageing. None of the interaction terms were significant. CONCLUSION: Family caregivers might benefit from interventions that target self-compassion and positive attitudes towards ageing, such as mindfulness or educational programs, to promote well-being.
