Serum Amyloid A Protein Promotes Fibrolysis and Recovery Following Alcohol Withdrawal

Year: 2026
Type: editorial
Abstract: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) impacts a significant portion of the population, estimated at 3.5% globally, and contributes to an estimated 50% of cirrhosis-related deaths.1,2 Although abstinence often leads to improvement in liver function, this does not occur in all patients and is not a rapid process. This led a team of researchers, led by Dr Schonfield, to investigate what cell types are responsible for fibrosis recovery following alcohol withdrawal, with the overall goal of identifying targetable processes to improve liver recovery and function in patients with ALD.
