The Association of Height Dissatisfaction With Maladaptive Muscularity-Oriented Behaviors and Pathology

Abstract: The present study aims to examine the association between height dissatisfaction and muscularity-related outcomes - specifically, drive for muscularity, muscle dysmorphia symptoms, and appearance and performance-enhancing drug (APED) misuse - among SMM. Additionally, the study investigates whether muscle dissatisfaction and self-rated masculinity moderate these associations. This secondary, cross-sectional analysis uses generalized linear models (GLMs) to test associations between height dissatisfaction and the following muscularity-related outcomes: 1) Drive for Muscularity - Behaviors subscale score, 2) Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) total score, 3) non-illicit APED misuse, and 4) illicit APED misuse. Moderation analyses will examine interactions between height dissatisfaction and self-rated masculinity, and height dissatisfaction and muscle dissatisfaction.
