Abstract: The report analyzes the current state of fundamental research (FR) in Romania and globally. The primary financial opportunities associated with fundamental research, the methods for acquiring financial resources, and their significance within the socio-economic context are outlined. Research and development is influenced by economic and social ties regulated by supply and demand. When referencing these concepts, one must consider the specificities of this work. Fundamental Research is characterized by its objective to uncover new laws, theories, data, and information, hence enhancing knowledge. Competitiveness in France is challenging and easily results in losses; it necessitates relentless effort and continuous comparison with the highest global standards set by potential competitors. It is presumed that even if the foremost researchers in a field are not involved in a competition, the experts reviewing research project applications will be familiar with the results derived from these requests and will provide a scientifically assessed report at that level. A comprehensive understanding of the systems that facilitate the financing of scientific research and the requisite resources for these activities is essential. The focus should remain on the sustained financing of scientific research, particularly basic research.
