Abstract: Hans Döllgast's Journal retour presents an unconventional, retrospective self-portrait that resists chronological narration and favors fragmented, allusive storytelling. The work intertwines autobiographical reflection with artistic and philosophical commentary, inviting interpretation through subtle references and omissions.Döllgast's life, from his humanist education and early fascination with Antiquity to his architectural studies under figures like Riemerschmid and Behrens, shaped a distinctive synthesis of precision and poetic ambiguity. His architectural legacy-particularly his postwar reconstructions of the Alte Pinakothek and other Munich landmarks-embodies his belief in continuity, craftsmanship, and historical resonance.Yet Journal retour conceals as much as it reveals: its cryptic tone and deliberate omissions, especially concerning the Nazi era, mirror Döllgast's ambivalent stance toward history and authorship, positioning the text as both autobiography and architectural metaphor.
