Abstract: Hans Döllgast's architectural thought redefines the relationship between architecture, theatre, and everyday experience.Rather than conceiving architecture as static or commemorative, he viewed it as inherently performative-a medium that stages interactions between people, space, and time. His fascination with theatricality was not about spectacle or illusion but about the suggestive and participatory potential of built environments.Drawing from his humanist education and engagement with literature, painting, and music, Döllgast approached architecture as both an interpretive and poetic act.His writings reveal a deep interest in the »play« of opposites-seriousness and joy, austerity and abundance, monumentality and intimacy-manifested in his buildings and sketches alike. From humble farmhouse interiors to monumental staircases, Döllgast explored how architecture mediates between the sacred and the profane, the everyday and the historical.Ultimately, his work demonstrates that architectural space gains meaning through performance, transformation, and the enchantment of lived experience.
