Rating Popular Anime and Movie Characters
Year: 2025
Type: other
Abstract: In a previous study we conducted, we asked American participants to rate the extent to which they identify with a hero character from popular American tv shows and movies. We found that American participants identified more with hero characters than control characters (Boals et al., 2024). We tried to replicate this finding using anime characters. Much to our surprise, we did not replicate this finding. We speculate the reason for our failure to replicate is that in the first study, we had a cultural match (i.e. American participants rating American characters). In our follow-up study, we had a cultural mismatch (i.e. American participants rating Japanese characters). In the current study, we will experimentally test our hunch by asking both American and Japanese participants to rate both American and Japanese characters. The purpose of this study is to examine potential cultural differences in the extent to which American and Japanese individuals identify with American and Japanese characters from popular tv shows and movies.
