The Usage of Discourse Markers in Communication: A Comparative Analysis of Arabic and English
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This research investigates the use of discourse markers by native speakers of Arabic and English in virtual communication. It focuses on the subtle ways in which these discourse markers influence relationships, meaning, and the flow of online communication. Although previous case studies have examined the use of discourse markers in digital settings and spoken language, little attention has been paid to how they function across different cultural contexts in informal virtual environments. The literature review shows that discourse markers in English typically help speakers organize ideas, express disagreement indirectly, and hedge, whereas discourse markers in Arabic convey religious, emotional, and relational meanings. These differences reveal underlying cultural norms that this research seeks to clarify. This research uses a qualitative approach to analyze ten naturally occurring virtual discourses—five in English and five in Arabic—drawn from YouTube, Telegram, and WhatsApp. These social media platforms were selected as they reflect both immediate, spontaneous interactions and more deliberate written responses. The discourse markers were categorized based on their evaluative, emotional, and structural functions and examined within their conversational setting. The analysis demonstrates that English and Arabic differ in how profoundly and how regularly the functions of the discourse markers appear. Conversations in Arabic exhibit interpersonal closeness, evident emotion, and cultural shaping, while interactions in English rely on organizing ideas and hedging. The results shed light on how socially salient and culturally grounded discourse markers influence virtual communication.
