RDMTraining4NFDI – Report on the evaluation of certification types and processes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This report aims to introduce the findings from the Initialisation Phase of RDMTraining4NFDI. The opening chapter gives an overview of the organisational framework within which this basic service operates. It then summarises the overarching goals and delineates the objectives of the basic service as originally defined in RDMTraining4NFDI’s Initialisation Phase proposal, thereby providing context to calibrate readers’ expectations. The following three chapters summarise those key conclusions and requirements derived from RDMTraining4NFDI’s preliminary work, which are directly relevant to the design of RDMTraining4NFDI’s draft of a certification process and its recommendations on mandatory preconditions. Specifically, Chapter 2 presents the findings of the training materials analysis Chapter 3 addresses the findings of the training format analysis; and Chapter 4 presents the findings of the requirement analysis. Chapter 5 briefly introduces certification, commencing with a delineation of scope and a terminology. Subsequently, it introduces extant certification types and certification formats. Chapter 6 summarises the methodical approach. Subsequently, it undertakes an evaluation of extant certification practices. It then sets forth recommendations for next steps to be taken towards establishing a credentialing process aimed at formally recognising the acquisition of RDM competencies and skills across the NFDI. Chapter 7 provides an outlook of RDMTraining4NFDI’s Integration Phase. The final chapter, Questions and Answers, is added to gather feedback from the RDM community. This input is highly valued, as it facilitates a focused and effective transition into RDMTraining4NFDI’s Integration Phase. The report comprises an appendix, a bibliography and a list of URLs for cited institutions and digital resources. This document covers: Deliverable D3.1: Collection and evaluation of existing certification types and formats and Deliverable D3.2: Evaluation of existing certification processes and recommendations for RDM training formats
