Abstract: Differences in risk profi leWomen with STEMI tend to present approximately 5 to 10 years later than men.It has been established that endogenous estrogens delay the development of cardiovascular disease in premenopausal women. 1 Age is a relevant factor, as older age is associated with a worse cardiovascular risk profi le, with a higher prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and previous strokes compared to men.In contrast, women have a lower prevalence of active smoking and previous myocardial infarction than men.1,2 However, despite a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors at presentation, the most signifi cant variable in the disparity in mortality between sexes (after adjusting for these factors) is age. 2 From a pathophysiological perspective, women are more prone to microvascular dysfunction, exhibit different atherosclerotic plaque morphologies, and experience more endothelial erosion than rupture. The prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease is lower Central Figure: Gender diff erences in STEMI.Gender diff erences In St-Segment Elevation...
