Abstract: The authors declare no conflict of interest During the last decades, multiple studies have shown a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in women. However, they are often misdiagnosed, underestimated, and undertreated; in addition, women experience hormonal changes from adolescence to old age that affect cardiovascular physiology.Rates of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and CVD mortality have increased among young women. The prevalence of AMI in young women aged 35 to 54 years increased from 21% in 1995 to 31% in 2004; in comparison, the prevalence of AMI in men increased from 30 to 33%.
