Advancements of Nanotechnology in Sportswear: a Review of Materials, Preparation, Properties, and Future Prospects
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Industries worldwide are experiencing major changes due to nanotechnology. In the textile and clothing sectors, it improves performance by making fabrics more resistant to water, odors, flames, stains, UV light, and bacteria. Basically, nanotechnology creates materials that perform specific tasks better than other options available. This innovation has been developing for some time, and even with advances like molecularly measured capacitors, nanotech remains crucial. Functional fabrics designed with nanotechnology are expected to be important for the future of clothing. Nanotechnology is also increasingly utilized in sportswear, enhancing oil extraction, water repellency, antifouling, and thermal performance, along with providing mechanical protection and improved chemical behavior. This review discusses the need for sportswear to have multipurpose features using nanofibers, nanocomposites, and nano-finished fabrics. It covers the preparations of nanomaterials in sports shoes and clothing, and recent advancements in the industry. The study highlights evaluation techniques for sportswear and presents the benefits and challenges of applying nanotechnology, including improved breathability and self-cleaning properties.
