Abstract: Complications that increase health risks during pregnancy and childbirth are on the rise in the US, leading to elevated health care costs.1–5 Common complications such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, premature birth, low birth weight, and fetal macrosomia require more intensive medical care and often necessitate costly cesarean deliveries, contributing to overall higher health care expenses.1–6 In some cases, the added cost is significant.7 For example, the average hospital cost for a preterm infant or a very low birth weight infant is estimated to be $76,000 and $114,000, respectively, compared with just > $3,000 for a healthy, normal weight, full-term infant.
